Re: Middle School Rules
In accordance with the Constitution and By Laws of the Michigan Youth Lacrosse
Association ("MYLA"), games will be conducted in accordance with the
National Federation of State High School Associations ("NFHS") Boys
Lacrosse Rules Book and the exceptions to the NFHS boys lacrosse rules as written
by the US Lacrosse Youth Council. This is published in the back of the NFHS
Boys Lacrosse Rules Book. In addition, the following MYLA rules and guidelines
shall apply and supercede where any conflict exists:
The Cadet level (grades 5 and 6) shall follow the rules and regulations
described for the Junior level by the US Lacrosse Youth Council
The Middle School level (grades 7 and 8) shall follow the rules and regulations
described for the Senior level by the US Lacrosse Youth Council
Equipment: It is recommended that helmets have 4 point chin straps. Hockey
helmets are permitted as long as they are CSA or HECC approved and bear a
label so indicating. In the interest of safety, helmets may not have plastic
masks.
Time of play
Cadets (grades 5 and 6) shall play a 10 minute regulation clock. Teams may
request a regular substitution (horn) at any dead ball.
Middle School (grades 7 and 8) shall use a 10 minute regulation clock. Teams
may request a regular substitution (horn) on any dead ball passing either
the end line or sideline
Penalties
One handed checks are not allowed at the Cadet (grades 5 and 6) level. All
one handed checks shall be called a slash (whether contact is made or not).
Officials shall recognize intent to check and control of stick. This does
not mean any player participating with one hand on the stick is committing a slash
Checks using the butt end of the stick ("ice pick") are not allowed
at any youth level
All coaches, players and officials should take special note of the rules exception
contained herein and the exceptions to NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules as written by
the US Lacrosse Youth Council. These rules are for the protection of the players
and to provide an enjoyable and safe experience for participants at all levels
of age and experience.
